It was made that way to show unity, standing in ranks, right next to each other. Something that lacks in the Islamic world today.

They pray facing towards the city of Mecca, which is the home city of their prophet, Muhammad. They all are also supposed to visits Mecca once in their lifetime, make a pilgrimage there.

That is what the angel Gabriel conveyed to Muhammed for God's followers to do - it is showing submission to God and asking for protection five times a day.

Pretty muich everyone prays in some formation - the whole kneeling thing started it. Personally, I think it has to do with standing up for yourself - the lower the praying, the less respect for individual humans.
